Our Story

True North Training was born from a shared belief that health is built through small, consistent choices—and that lasting change comes from within.

With careers first as nurses, then as nurse practitioners, we’ve witnessed both the fragility and the resilience of the human body. This taught us reverence for strength, patience for healing, and deep respect for what people carry quietly.

As athletes, we are, at our core, amateurs- from the Latin amator, meaning one who loves. We move because we love it. Not for podiums or pace charts, but for sunrise miles with friends and middle of the pack victories. For the way strength training steadies our minds and clarifies our spirit.

True North Training was founded on this intersection- our health educations and our amateur pursuits of sport. Strength comes in taking chances, making small steps, giving consistent effort, and building community. When we choose courage over comfort, when we show up again and again, something shifts…we become stronger, calmer, more certain of our direction. We believe strength training is one of the most powerful tools for prevention, confidence, and longevity and that it should be accessible, supportive, and built on a solid foundation.

When you find your true north, your inner direction, you discover what becomes possible. Strength grows. Confidence builds. Community supports you. And with consistent, resilient effort, you begin to dream bigger… not out of comparison, but out of belief in yourself and what can become possible through small steps taken over time.

Maureen Smith, NASM-CPT, MSN, BSN, RN

Founder

Maureen is a NASM- Certified Personal Trainer. Her interests include foundational strength training, distance running, both on roads and trails, and novice skate and classic cross country skiing (very novice!). When she isn’t out and about, she is embracing life with a wonderful husband and four active kids, planning camping trips with friends, learning about food and nutrition, eating early dinners, drinking tea on the couch before bed, and enjoying long conversations with anyone who will listen. Maureen values relationships as a cornerstone of behavior change and is here to support clients as they begin, re-enter or continue their strength journey.
